The Piere Lomont is perfect for the viola enthusiast that is looking for a nicer viola and a deeper and rich tone. This viola is reminiscent of the French masters of the early 1800’s and celebrates the rich history of French viola making.
The Piere Lomont Master Viola has higher quality tonewoods, beautifully decorated ebony fittings, and is all round a higher, much more refined quality instrument than the Piere Lomont. For the player who is looking for that higher quality in an instrument.
Quite a few years ago I was unhappy with the violas you could get in this price class and after a lot of research and looking at hundreds of different instruments in the same range I decided that the best thing to do would be to design my own.
I now work together with a small family of luthiers that make the most amazing instruments that meet my fussy expectations.
There are so many Chinese makers flooding the market with cheap to average instruments, that the really good makers often get overlooked.
The great thing is that quite a few Chinese makers there have won International violin-making awards in Europe, the US and Asian countries, so there are definitely makers of quality… Why China? I did also find some good European makers that made similar quality… BUT THEY WERE 3 TO 4 TIMES THE PRICE FOR EXACTLY THE SAME QUALITY OF WORK AND MATERIALS! That really didn’t seem like good value to me! This maker I found really takes his art seriously… he would carefully choose timers of great quality and beauty and hand craft instruments that not only sound great and are easy to play. His wife makes the varnish – when I last went there, she had lots of bottles of fine Italian recipe varnish curing in the sun on the roof of the workshop.
The great thing is: They look like a really beautiful older instrument!
- The Piere Lomont viola is easier to play, because I personally do my Master set-up, and it has an amazing and rich sound. It is a known fact that many string players fail because the instrument they are playing are not been set up properly, and will not do what they need it to do. This can lead to problems with playing in tune, and in extreme cases, even RSI! It’s just not worth taking the risk of buying a badly set up instrument.
- The Piere Lomont viola is designed by me
- the viola has been lovingly handcrafted using only the best quality materials. Everywhere you look on the viola you see perfection. From the masterly handcrafted scroll to the beautifully antiqued varnish after the recipe of the great Italian masters.
- Once you play your Piere Lomont viola you will find out why most people can’t make their viola sound good… The Lomont viola makes a much better sound than most instruments 4 times the price!
- Impress the other string players in the Orchestra: The Piere Lomont has a beautiful varnish that is reminiscent of the French Masters.
- The instrument has antique marks to celebrate the age old tradition of viola making by giving the instruments an authentically older look.
Over the years I have seen people make the wrong decision and be stuck with just awful sounding instruments, or instruments that needed to have hundreds of dollars of work done before you could even play them!
There is a lot that is right about the Piere Lomont viola.
I particularly love the rich and beautiful sound. When I draw the bow across the strings the viola just produces the most beautiful sound that I could listen to all day, which is a good thing, because it makes you want to play more.
- The Lomont viola is easier to play that most other instruments under $5,000… in my opinion this is the best sounding viola under $5,000 for a much lower price
- It will take you to the next level of playing
- The Piere Lomont will allow you to really move ahead in your violin playing
It is made to my specifications from all the right timbers in the traditional way that has been used since the 16th century in Italy. It uses the old Italian varnish recipe that has been antiqued to give you the feel of a real antique Italian instrument. Quick preview of what you will get:
The Instrument:

My instruments are easier to play, because I personally do my Master set-up. It is a known fact that many string players fail because the instrument they are playing has not been set up properly and will not do what they need it to do. - Plane the Fingerboard to a professional
standard. This means that you will have a fingerboard that has the same shape as that of most instruments that you will hear in concert halls around the world - I will fit a professional quality French bridge crafted by a master violin maker with specialized acoustic knowledge to make the instrument sound the best that it can.
- Fit a professional quality soundpost to really bring out the rich tonal qualities. There is a reason that in many languages the soundpost is called the “Soul”. It takes a master to fit and move the soundpost into the right position to really make the instrument sing.
- I always fit the Instruments with great quality strings for that rich sound.
- Each peg is carefully refitted to make sure that if is very easy to tune the instrument using the pegs.
- The tailpiece is checked and refitted to make sure it is in the best acoustical position
- I check and recheck the string height and spacing to make sure it is absolutely perfect. It is only easy to play the violin when the string height is absolutely right.
- I always play each instrument and adjust it until I’m so happy with it that I want to keep the violin myself. I always try out the instruments far too long, because they are so much fun to play. This way you can be sure that when your instrument leaves my workshop, everything about it is perfect.

Bill Alexander –
We had a rehearsal tonight in preparation for our upcoming Christmas concert.
The first person to notice was our conductor. He was very impressed with the clarity and projection that can be attained with this fine instrument. Of course, our co-principle violist noticed too. Because our principal violist wasn’t able to come tonight, the co-principal violist asked me to move up next to her into the principdl violist’s chair. At first she she didn’t know that I had acquired a new viola. At the end of a Tchaikovsky piece we’re performing, she turned towards me and said “I was wondering how your playing improved so much in just one week. I note know why; you have a new viola that sounds so beautiful!”
After rehearsal, she asked me if she could try it out. I didn’t hesitate because she’s quite a good player. She was very impressed and she asked me where I had purchased it. I sent her links to both your website and to your YouTube channel.
Her viola is a cheap Stentnor – very similar to the viola I’d purchased just to prepare myself for my return to the orchestra that I hadn’t played with for several years. She told me that playing her Stentnor VSO (Viola Shaped Object) was akin to trying to tame a wild beast. I told her that those were my sentiments exactly with regard to my lousy viola which was manufactured (very likely in large numbers) on some assembly line by some very underpaid people.
I want you to know that my my decision to buy your Pierre Lomont master viola was an excellent one, based upon several months of research that involved driving around Perth to try out dozens of violas – almost every one of them disapointed me in one way or another, not to mention that they all had price tags much, much higher than the Pierre Lomont! I asked her to guess how much I paid for your fine instrument. She started out at $6,000. I used my hands to gesture “lower.” Down to $5,000, then $4,000. When she reached $3,500, I told her she was very close indeed.
This email comes to you from an extremely happy and grateful guy. This viola has qualities that parallel much more expensive instruments, and these qualities are actually improving with every bow-stroke! Our principal cellist also chimed in with a lovely remark. He told me that tonight was the 1st time that he could hear my viola in action and that he was very impressed with its ability to carry such a beautiful ringing tone with the volume that the 16″ Stentnor simply wasn’t able to produce. I’m also very grateful that I went with Olaf’s advice to go with a 15.5″ Pierre Lomont master. It’s so much easier for me to play a viola that’s a mere 1/2″ shorter than what I’ve always played. Perhaps that’s the case partly because I’m getting older (half a year away from turning 70) – however, it’s more likely that, because the Pierre Lomont master line instruments are built using excellent, well aged tone-woods, are built according to Olaf’s own design and, last but not least, are such a joy to play due to Olaf’s very fussy master set-up. He’s a luthier who is not only extremely dedicated to his work, but who is also someone who really cares about his customers and the music that’s supposed to bring joy (and tears) to the audiences.
With my sincere thanks and kindest regards,
Bill Alexander, WA

Well, well, well well etc…I am blown away. I can say without conviction that Olafs’ Pierre Lamont has surpassed all my very , very high expectations. It looks and sounds amazing. I was not expecting a carbon fibre bow, what a great surprise. I’m so very happy that I was able to obtain a great violin to learn upon/with. I am really looking forward to my violin journey, practicing 40 hours a day lol. Many, many thanks to you and Olaf, I wish you happiness and joy.

Just received today. Had taken about 7 days to receive which is awesome. I can’t praise this violin enough and the customer service. I don’t even feel worthy to play it.
Exceptional Craftsmanship. Masterfully set up. After knowing Olaf was gonna be the one behind setting it up and had the violin built to his specs, pretty easy sell. After playing for two hours now: The deep rich tone, overtones and projection is out of this world. Couldn’t ask for more about the whole process and buying from Olafs work shop. Truly, Thank you Coralie and Olaf.

I finally got to tune and play the Lomont yesterday afternoon…..OH WOW, it SINGS!!
The sound is GORGEOUS and makes my old violin sound like a brick. I am so glad I upgraded to the maximum of my violin $$$ ability. She’s quite pretty too.
Once again, thank you for making the process so easy and sending the Lomont so quickly. I am in love….

The beautiful violin made it to my house today. I was surprised it arrived so quickly. The packaging job was amazing. I am so impressed by how beautiful the violin is. The violin is playing perfectly, and I couldn’t be happier. I am going to my violin lesson today and I can’t wait to show everyone this beautiful instrument.

I have to say, Olaf’s videos do not do that violin justice. I’ve seen a couple of examples in videos, however, it is much better looking and sounding in person! To be honest, it’s stunning to just look at. It sounds wonderful, as well! Very pleased with the purchase.

I had my first lesson with my teacher earlier this week. My teacher played the violin, and it sounded absolutely amazing! The violin has an incredibly powerful sound, as well as a beautiful tone and gorgeous quality. I hadn’t heard the violin except for practicing, so it was incredible to hear it played by someone else so I could hear. My teacher said if he didn’t know or much it cost, he’d expect the instrument to cost much more than it did! He had very high praises for the violin! I’m very excited about my violin, and learning to bring out the best of its qualities. My teacher mentioned was that the bow was of high quality and should last most of my violin playing days and was surprised it came packaged with the violin, he also said that if he was in the market for a new instrument he would definitely consider Olaf’s violins. My teacher is a freelance concert violinist who plays for many of Victoria’s and Australia’s highest orchestras
I really appreciate all you and Olaf have done for me, I can’t thank you enough!
